Cleaning & Maintenance

HOW TO CLEAN YOUR GLASSES

Here is the best way to clean foggy, dirty, or grimy lenses:

  • 1. Rinse your glasses with tap water. If your glasses are really dirty from working out in the yard or doing some cleaning and they’re covered in dirt or dust, it’s best to rinse off your glasses with water before you clean them.
  • 2. Use the right cleaner. Most of the time you’ll be cleaning your glasses to get rid of oils from your skin or hair that get transferred to the lenses by fingerprints. A special liquid cleaner specifically made for eyeglasses will help you get the smudges off the lens, it’s typically a mixture of alcohol and water. Or, you can make your own formula by mixing one part rubbing alcohol and one part water.
  • 3. Use the right cloth. It’s also important to use the right type of cloth to clean your glasses. Some textiles, like a tissue, wool, or certain synthetic fabrics can scratch the lenses or leave behind unwanted fibers. A microfiber cloth or a lint-free towel works really nicely to remove oily smudges because of the soft material and tight weave of the fabric. You can also use a clean cotton t-shirt but make sure that it doesn’t have a screen print that can also scratch the lenses.
  • 4. Hold the glasses correctly. When you are getting ready to clean your glasses you should hold onto the temple, near the front of the frames to get a good grip without touching the lenses.
  • 5. Spray the front and back of the lenses.
  • 6. Gently wipe from one side to the other using a circular motion. Use a gentle circular motion and wipe from one side to the other.  Don’t just wipe across the lens or scrub back and forth. Note that cleaner removes body oil not only from the lenses, but the nose pads, hinges and screws. Don’t neglect these areas when cleaning, as this body oil can loosen them and cause breakage.

TAKING CARE of AND STORING YOUR GLASSES

These are a few tips and tricks to keeping your glasses in tip-top shape:

  • When removing reading glasses from the face, do so gently and evenly with both hands. This will prevent the frame from becoming stretched out and the screws from being loosened.
  • Avoid wearing glasses on the top of the head, as this will place stress on the temples and eventually distort the shape. Store glasses in a case when not in use.
  • When placing glasses on a flat surface, always face lenses upward and place frame upside-down as to avoid scratches on their surface and distortion of arms.
  • Avoid leaving reading glasses on a car dashboard, as intense, direct heat can deform their shape.
  • Avoid letting perspiration or hair spray sit on lenses, as both can damage the lens coating.

HOW TO REPAIR YOUR GLASSES

Whether you accidentally sit on them or simply have a loose screw, these steps will surely help:

  • Modern eyeglasses use small screws to hold the top and bottom portions of the frames firmly around the lens. Similar small screws are also found elsewhere on the frames to join components together. These screws can loosen over time, and should be tightened periodically. Because of small screw sizes, a small-bladed screwdriver is needed. Small screwdriver kits are available at most convenient and eyeglass stores. A magnifying glass can also be helpful in completing this repair.
  • Many eyeglass stores will perform this repair as a courtesy to customers.
  • You can use clear nail polish to keep pesky loose screws in place just apply the nail polish to the entire screw before you tighten it, then dab a little on the top and bottom of the screw once it is in place. The nail polish is much kinder to your glasses than abrasive super glue, but it still keeps the screw from loosening or popping out.
